All of the fans of the original Teen Titans can put on their party hats because today, I’ll be reviewing their favourite cartoon. Last week, I reviewed the spinoff ‘Teen Titans Go!’ which isn’t the tastiest cookie in the jar. It was a mere oatmeal and raisin compared to the salted caramel and choc-chip that is, the original show. Have I made you hungry? Go grab a snack, then come back and keep reading. I’ll wait.
Teen Titans is a cartoon about a group of teenaged superheroes that protect Jump City from a wide variety of scary, ugly, eccentric and annoying villains. There are just too many to mention.
The show is animated a lot like a comic book when it comes to action. When they’re fighting a bad guy, you’ll see just about every angle of the battle. There’s also a lot of scenes where the style of the animation will temporarily switch to another, usually for comedic purposes.
There are a LOT of characters in this cartoon. I won’t be going into detail about the villains and recurring characters because there’s just too many of them. I will however, talk about the Titans, just in case there are any humans reading this post who haven’t seen the show yet. Also, if you’re wondering, I’m not counting Terra. I never thought of her as a Teen Titan, so sorry to all you Terra huggers. I will expect your rage in my comment section.
I’ll start with Robin, as he’s the leader. Despite his leadership skills, the guy can be childish and stubborn, and he likes to yell a lot. I’m not saying Robin’s a bad person though. He’s really smart and he’ll do anything for his friends. Fun fact: Robin is the only Titan that doesn’t have any powers.
Starfire is an alien girl from the planet Tamaran. In the group, she’s the sweet one. She can be happy about almost anything and doesn’t have a very good understanding of human culture. This usually results in her saying and doing awkward things, as well as eating objects that aren’t actually edible. Don’t be fooled though, she’s got some really cool powers.
Raven is by far, my favourite character. She’s someone who everybody can relate to, and she’s really funny. Raven is half daemon, and often appears grouchy because her powers will get out of control if she feels emotion. She has the most awesome powers in the team, and can do just about anything. Fly, go through walls, levitate objects, teleport, read minds, you name it.
Beast Boy is the funniest character in the show. Everything about him from how he acts to the way he the way he talks, will have you doubled over giggling. He has the power to turn into any animal he wants, even dinosaurs. I like the fact that he doesn’t eat meat. I wish there were more vegetarian characters out there.
Cyborg used to be an athlete, but an accident left him with a body made of metal. He’s one of the hilarious characters who’s over the top and makes everything funny. It’s the dramatic way he talks that gets us all laughing.
The episodes follow an order that shows character development and story arcs. Most of them revolve around the Titans fighting a bad guy, but others feature different stories which I won’t be talking about, so that I don’t spoil anything. One pattern that occurs throughout the series, is at the end of a season, you can expect something BIG to happen.
This cartoon is awesome! I seriously recommend it to all my fellow cartoon nerds. There is a really good mixture of action, emotion and humour. I should probably warn you that you’ll most likely find one of the villains extremely irritating. I’m telling you now, do not take your frustrations out on your TV, tablet or smartphone. Stay awesome and keep watching cartoons. Toonbiter out!
